What is MS? Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease.
Every year, over 2,000 people in Illinois ride their bikes over 150 miles in HOPE
to raise money for MS research. The Hope Heart was created to both help
raise money and to also give back to those who have such kind hearts in doing
so. The good news is that the MS Society has very low overhead and almost all
of the donations are utilized for helping MS, not administration. The bad news
is that MS does not have a Jerry Lewis telethon or a high profile actor advocate
that gets the attention of the media and public. Most of the reason is that no
one knows what causes MS or how to treat it. “The Beach Party,” was formed
by Beach Luke’s husband and Daughter who also join in on the ride. If nothing
else, please know that your kindness in buying a hope heart is helping a woman
who is not only a sufferer of MS, but the most strong, beautiful, courageous
woman that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
